EN IEC 61439 Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies
The IEC 61439 standard replaced IEC 60439 in 2009 and removes the distinction between assemblies that have undergone full type testing and those that have undergone partial type testing. Under IEC 61439, all assemblies must meet the same safety requirements regardless of the verification method (testing, calculations or design rules). The new standard also introduces a clearer division of responsibility between original equipment manufacturers and assembly manufacturers, and establishes the concept of a nominal diversity factor for realistic load calculations.
EN IEC 61439 provides a mature and comprehensive framework for the design of low-voltage switchgear, combining stringent safety requirements with practical implementation. By providing a variety of verification methods — testing, calculations and design rules — the standard adapts to the diverse needs of custom panel builders and mass manufacturers, whilst maintaining consistent safety standards.
For electrical engineers and procurement specialists, understanding the IEC 61439 standard is not merely a matter of formal compliance. The standard’s requirements for temperature management, short-circuit withstand capability and internal insulation directly impact equipment reliability, service life and personnel safety. Correct application of the rated derating factor can lead to significant cost savings without compromising performance, whilst proper selection of insulation types ensures adequate protection under operating conditions.
As control panels become increasingly complex, incorporating intelligent monitoring, surge protection and interfaces for renewable energy sources, the core requirements of the IEC 61439 standard remain of paramount importance. The design verification framework, definition of responsibilities and performance criteria set out in the standard provide the technical foundation upon which modern power distribution systems are built.
For manufacturers, compliance with the IEC 61439 standard is both a requirement for entering the European Union market and a competitive advantage. Assemblies designed and tested in accordance with this standard demonstrate engineering precision, a commitment to safety and readiness for the global market.
