A potentially explosive atmosphere is one which is not, in itself, explosive under normal conditions, but which may become so in the event of unforeseen circumstances, such as a gas leak, a rise in temperature or pressure, or simply the failure of a component.
ATEX certification is the result of an explosion risk assessment.
Equipment that complies with ATEX requirements must be tested and assessed by notified bodies in accordance with European standards. Conformity assessment ensures that the device does not generate sparks or ignition sources and is suitable for the specific application.
ATEX conformity assessment procedure
• Category 1 (high risk — Zones 0, 20): strictly requires EC type testing and certification by a notified body, as well as an audit of the production quality system.
• Category 2 (medium risk — Zones 1, 21): for electrical equipment, the full involvement of a notified body is required; for non-electrical (mechanical) equipment, the technical documentation may be held by such a body.
• Category 3 (low risk – Zones 2, 22): allows for internal production control and a declaration of conformity by the manufacturer itself without the involvement of third parties.
Key stages of the assessment procedure
· Determination of applicability: checking whether the product falls within the scope of the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU.
· Classification of equipment: determining the group (I — for mines, II — for surface industry) and category (1, 2 or 3 depending on the level of protection).
· Selection of the assessment module: selection of the certification scheme in accordance with Article 13 of the Directive (depending on the category).
· Risk analysis and testing: assessment of potential ignition sources and testing of samples.
· Production audit: verification of the quality management system (for categories 1 and 2).
· Issuance of the certificate: issuance of the EU type-examination certificate by a notified body (where necessary).
· Marking and Declaration: affixing the CE marking, the Ex explosion protection symbol and the manufacturer’s signing of the declaration of conformity.
